What is law?

Egypt operates a civil-law system heavily influenced by the French tradition, with Islamic law shaping parts of personal status law.

This is the single most important thing for an international student to understand before choosing law in Egypt: if you intend to practise in a common-law country such as Nigeria or Ghana, a civil-law degree is a different starting point and your home bar's conversion requirements need checking before you enrol, not after.

Who it is for

  • Students who intend to work in or with civil-law jurisdictions.
  • Students interested in international law, comparative law or Islamic law.
  • Students who have checked their home jurisdiction's requirements first.

How long it takes

4 years

Commonly four years. Programme length is set by the university and the relevant national regulations, and it has changed in recent years. Confirm the exact structure for your intake with the university before you apply.

Law in Egypt — frequently asked questions

Can I practise law in my home country with an Egyptian law degree?
That is decided by your home country's bar or law council, and for common-law countries it usually involves additional requirements. Check with your own bar association before you enrol. This is a question to settle first, not last.

University requirements, tuition fees, deadlines, scholarship availability and immigration or residence rules can change. Students must verify final requirements with the relevant university and the appropriate authorities. NIADO provides guidance and application support, and does not guarantee admission, scholarships, visas or residence permits.
