Study in Egypt

What it costs to study in Egypt

This page will not give you a tuition figure. It will give you something more useful: how to get a real one, and what else to budget for.

Not confirmed from an official source

NIADO does not publish tuition figures we have not confirmed against an official university announcement for the current academic year. Ask us and we will request written quotations from the universities on your shortlist.

Why published fee figures are usually wrong

  • They quote an academic year that has already passed.
  • They quote the Egyptian student rate, not the international rate.
  • They quote tuition only and omit administrative and registration fees.
  • They quote per semester where the reader assumes per year, or the reverse.
  • They convert EGP to USD at a rate that has since moved, then present the USD figure as if it were official.

What a usable fee quotation contains

If any of these six is missing, you do not yet have a number you can budget against:

  1. 1The academic year it applies to — for example 2026/2027.
  2. 2Whether it is the international or the Egyptian student rate.
  3. 3The exact faculty or programme.
  4. 4Whether it is per semester, per year, or for the whole programme.
  5. 5Whether administrative and registration fees are included or excluded.
  6. 6The official source — an announcement, a letter, or an email from the admissions office.

A complete quotation reads like

“2026/2027 — International students — Faculty of Engineering — First semester — administrative fees excluded — per the university's official admissions announcement.”

On currency conversion

Egyptian tuition is normally set in Egyptian pounds, and sometimes in US dollars for international students. A converted figure is an estimate, not a price. Wherever this site shows a USD equivalent it is labelled as an approximate conversion, because the university will charge in the currency its own announcement states.

Everything besides tuition

Tuition is the number everyone quotes and roughly half of what you will actually spend. The pattern we see repeatedly is a family that budgets tuition precisely and everything else vaguely, then runs short in the second semester.

Tuition
The figure everyone quotes. Must be confirmed per programme, per academic year, at the international rate.
Application & registration fees
Often separate from tuition and sometimes one-off. Ask explicitly whether they are included.
Accommodation
University housing where available, private rent where not. Varies enormously by city and area.
Food
Cooking for yourself costs a fraction of eating out. This is the line students most underestimate.
Local transport
Daily commuting to campus. Depends heavily on how far your accommodation is.
Phone and data
A local SIM in your first week is close to essential.
Books and materials
Higher for medicine, engineering and architecture than for most other fields.
Health cover
Check what, if anything, your university requires or provides.
Residence process
The student residence process has its own costs and timing.
Flights home
Budget for at least one return trip per year, plus the arrival flight.

Questions to ask the university

  • What is the total first-year cost for an international student on this exact programme?
  • What is due at registration, and what is due later?
  • Which fees recur annually and which are one-off?
  • Does the fee change between year one and year two?
  • What happens if the exchange rate moves?
  • Can I have the written fee schedule?

Frequently asked questions

Why does NIADO not publish tuition fees?
Because we have not confirmed current figures from official university announcements for the current academic year. A fee published without a source and a date quietly goes stale and then misleads families who budget against it. We publish figures with their source and verification date, or we publish nothing.
Is studying in Egypt cheaper than Europe or North America?
Tuition and living costs are generally lower than comparable Western destinations. But 'generally' is not a budget. Get real written quotations for the specific programmes you are considering before drawing a conclusion.
Can I work while studying in Egypt?
Whether and how an international student may work is governed by Egyptian regulations and by the conditions of your residence. Do not build a budget that depends on income you have not confirmed you are permitted to earn.

University requirements, tuition fees, deadlines, scholarship availability and immigration or residence rules can change. Students must verify final requirements with the relevant university and the appropriate authorities. NIADO provides guidance and application support, and does not guarantee admission, scholarships, visas or residence permits.
