Master's admission in Egypt

Postgraduate admission works differently from undergraduate admission, and the difference catches applicants out.

What master's admission is based on

Master's admission rests on your bachelor's degree: the classification or grade you achieved, how closely your undergraduate field matches the master's subject, and — for research-based programmes — whether a suitable supervisor is available.

That last point is the one applicants most often miss. For research master's programmes, the availability of a supervisor in your area can matter as much as your grades.

There is no single checklist that fits every university

Requirements differ between institutions, between faculties within the same institution, between degree levels and between nationalities. Use this guide to prepare, then confirm the exact requirement with each university on your shortlist before you rely on it.

Documents usually involved

  • Bachelor's degree certificate
  • Full academic transcript
  • A valid international passport
  • Curriculum vitae
  • A research proposal, for research-based programmes
  • Letters of recommendation, where required
  • Proof of English or Arabic proficiency, where required
  • Authentication or legalisation of your degree documents, where required

Taught or research?

Taught master's programmes are structured around coursework and examinations. Research master's programmes centre on a thesis under supervision. They demand different things from you and lead to different places — a research master's is the more natural route towards a PhD.

Establish which type a programme is before applying. The distinction is not always obvious from the title.
