Admission for Nigerian students

Guidance for students and families in Nigeria — including the recognition question that should be settled before anything else.

Settle recognition before you settle anything else

If you intend to practise a regulated profession in Nigeria — medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, nursing, law, engineering — the relevant Nigerian body decides whether and how a degree from a specific foreign university is recognised. That is the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, the Pharmacists Council of Nigeria, the Nursing and Midwifery Council, the Nigerian Bar Association or COREN, depending on your field.

Contact them directly, about the specific university, before you pay a deposit. No agency can make that decision on their behalf.

Ask the regulator, not an agent

An agent's opinion on recognition is worth nothing. Only the regulator's own written position counts — and it is free to ask them.

Your secondary school results

WAEC, NECO and NABTEB results are assessed against each university's own equivalency rules. How many sittings are accepted, which subjects are required and what grades are needed all vary by institution and faculty.

There is no single checklist that fits every university

Requirements differ between institutions, between faculties within the same institution, between degree levels and between nationalities. Use this guide to prepare, then confirm the exact requirement with each university on your shortlist before you rely on it.

Documents Nigerian applicants usually need

  • International passport with generous validity
  • WAEC, NECO or NABTEB certificate and statement of result
  • Academic transcript
  • Birth certificate
  • Passport photographs to specification
  • Authentication or legalisation, where required by the university

Practical notes for Nigerian families

  • Ensure your name is spelled identically across passport, certificate and transcript before applying.
  • Start document authentication early; it is the slowest step.
  • Pay university fees to the university, not to an individual's personal account.
  • Be sceptical of urgency. Real deadlines are published by universities and can be checked in minutes.

Frequently asked questions

Is an Egyptian medical degree recognised in Nigeria?
Recognition for medical practice in Nigeria is determined by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, which sets its own requirements. Contact MDCN directly about the specific university before enrolling.
How many WAEC sittings do Egyptian universities accept?
This varies by university and faculty. Confirm the current rule with each institution on your shortlist.

University requirements, tuition fees, deadlines, scholarship availability and immigration or residence rules can change. Students must verify final requirements with the relevant university and the appropriate authorities. NIADO provides guidance and application support, and does not guarantee admission, scholarships, visas or residence permits.
