Admission

Undergraduate admission in Egypt

Entering an Egyptian university directly from secondary school — what is assessed, what you need, and the order to do it in.

What undergraduate admission is based on

Undergraduate admission in Egypt rests primarily on your secondary school certificate and the grades in the subjects relevant to your chosen faculty. Medicine, dentistry, pharmacy and engineering are the most competitive and weight science and mathematics results heavily.

Different secondary qualifications — WAEC, NECO, the Sudanese certificate, the Chadian baccalauréat, the British A-Levels, the American high school diploma, the IB — are each assessed against the university's own equivalency rules. How your specific certificate is treated is a question for the university, and the answer is not the same everywhere.

There is no single checklist that fits every university

Requirements differ between institutions, between faculties within the same institution, between degree levels and between nationalities. Use this guide to prepare, then confirm the exact requirement with each university on your shortlist before you rely on it.

Documents usually involved

  • A valid international passport with generous remaining validity
  • Secondary school certificate and statement of result
  • Academic transcript showing subjects and grades
  • Birth certificate
  • Passport photographs to the stated specification
  • Authentication or legalisation, where the university requires it
  • Certified translation, where the documents are not in an accepted language

Language of instruction

This is the factor that most often derails an undergraduate plan. Most public university undergraduate teaching is in Arabic, with specific English-taught programmes available. Most private universities teach in English.

It is decided programme by programme. Confirm it for the exact course you are applying to, in writing, before you accept an offer.

The order to work in

  1. 1Decide your programme, and confirm recognition with the professional body in the country where you intend to work.
  2. 2Shortlist universities against your results, budget and language.
  3. 3Confirm the current entry requirement for your nationality with each university.
  4. 4Begin any authentication or legalisation immediately — it is the slowest step.
  5. 5Prepare and submit the application through the correct route.
  6. 6Read the admission decision carefully, including any conditions attached.
  7. 7Plan travel, accommodation and arrival.
  8. 8Complete registration in person and begin the residence process.

Frequently asked questions

What grades do I need to study in Egypt?
It depends on the university and the faculty, and it changes between intakes. Competitive faculties such as medicine require considerably stronger results than others. We confirm the current requirement with your target universities rather than publishing one figure that would be wrong for most readers.
Can I apply with a statement of result?
Some universities accept a statement of result or provisional transcript subject to later confirmation, and some do not. Confirm with the specific institution.

University requirements, tuition fees, deadlines, scholarship availability and immigration or residence rules can change. Students must verify final requirements with the relevant university and the appropriate authorities. NIADO provides guidance and application support, and does not guarantee admission, scholarships, visas or residence permits.
